Hot Pant Fun House

February 7th – March 8th, 2020
Opening reception Friday, February 7th, 7 – 9 PM

The Royal is pleased to present Hot Pant Fun House, a group exhibition curated by Amelia Biewald which features the work of James Esber, Paul Gagner, Staver Klitgaard, Alex Kuno, Brent Owens, David Pappaceno, Colin Radcliffe, and Noelle Velez. This collection of work explores the persuasive power of humor in visual art.

These works beckon the viewer with alluring shapes, rich colors and dynamic compositions; then upon closer inspection, their sly humor subtly pokes you in the ribs. However, the strong connection between the works of these artists lies in their exceptional craft and in the adept application of formal visual elements paralleling every joke. They evoke a depth and nuanced beauty while engaging in their own playful funhouse wit.

These works address the complexity of our contemporary lives and surroundings, often tinged with something darker and more complicated. Narratives of both personal relationships and societal experiences lead us into new perspectives on the sensual allure and awkward grotesquerie of our crash-and-burn popular culture.
